Gervana, it's great to sit down with you and talk a little about why you have been so successful in your life... thanks. So, tell us, what were those ever-important first steps along the path of success in academics and athletics? "Entering high school, I had been finding the right path to become an successful student-athlete overall. Wingate High School is well-known academically and through their athletic program. But, in addition, along my four-year high school journey, I also found my Saviour, my Father, my God to rely on for guidance and strength." So, it seems your achievement of finding some important spiritual answers for life really helped you with everything else... has it been hard to keep that path? "The high school level of committing to my grades, my game, and my God has truly been a blessing. Furthermore, I have stayed committed to these three values in my life because I want to reach success through out college as well. Being a student-athlete in high school was twice the pain, twice the stress, twice the fatigue, but it payed off." ![]() Above/right: Gervana Begay/#21 driving past a defender and "keeping it in the family..." her dad, at left, also drives past a defender.![]() Above & right: Gervana Begay/#4-Volleyball/Outside Hitter-- serves Wingate High School Athletics in two sports. | "Keeping the Path" ( A Conversation with Gervana Begay ) ![]() How was it hard in particular? "The commitment I have put towards my grades was challenging coming from a family of only high school graduates. The commitment I put towards my game strengthened me as a player... and through the Word of God. Philippians 4:13, an athletically-motivating verse is what committed me to my God. Therefore, I found strength and guidance in those in the areas of God, grades, and my game... I will certainly need need success in all three in order to be successful in college." True, sounds like you've thought about this a lot, Vona...
"Yeah, college has always been on my mind... it still is. The educational journey that I will embark on after high school, the passion for my game that I have, and my commitment to Jesus... I will need these three to be strong because, without that, I'm hopeless. I'll need God's strength and the guidance comes from Him."
Wow... anything else you'd like to add? "I believe that this higher level that I'm going on to will not only be a huge blessing, but it will lead me to a successful life that I'm going to have with Jesus Christ, my Saviour." Good stuff Gervana, Truth-Spin, Inc. hopes that you follow your Saviour and that you find even more success... the paths you taken have led you well... keep it up! ![]() |
